Hello All,
I am trying to install and run SSRS 2005 on a Windows XP Pro workstation.
The installation completes and I have used the configuration tool to configure reporting services. All first six icons on the left are green. However, I cannot connect to the default report server from Management Studio and get the following message;
===================================
Client found response content type of 'text/html', but expected 'text/xml'.
The request failed with the error message:

I also cannot reach the reporting services website from Internet Explorer using /Reports/">http://<servername>/Reports/
getting the message '(HTTP 500 Internal Server Error)'.
Any one have any ideas how to resolve this?
I have successfully installed and run reporting services using the same SSRS 2005 Developer edition on three other Windows 2003 Server machines without any of these errors.
What is wrong or how can I get the installation to work on Windows XP workstation?

Heh... maybe it figured out that you're breaking the license agreement and, therefore, the law by using the Developer Edition for production? ![]()

No I am not using the developer edition for production. All three server installs are on development and test servers under development. I am still using sql 2000 for production. Can anyone help?

You will need to get the actual error message. You can either get it from the ssrs log located under the sql server install folder, or try connecting to the report server on the local box.
Does your workstation have sql server sp2 installed. I would receive a 403 access forbidden error after I installed sql2005 sp2 on my computer. I actually had to uninstall sql server, and reinstall it leaving off sp2 to get it going again.

Ben,
The actual error message is as above in my first posting and, yes, I have sql 2005 sp2 installed, although reporting services did not work even before I installed sp2. I first thought that was the reason.
Is there any other work-around. I have seen reporting services work on more windows server 2003 machines but has anyone got it working on windows xp professional? Getting desperate now pls.........

Could be configuration. Have you tried opening from the server.
Connect to the server via remote desktop or walk to the server console and try to navigate to
it still may not work but might give you a better reason as to why.

I have tried http://localhost/reports but no joy. I am installing on a pc workstation with windows xp prof. No server involved in this, just single machine installation.

Since this is a workstation, non-server operating system, I would recommend using SQL Server Developer Edition, as this is best suited for such an environment. Put the installation CD/dvd in and begin the installation steps. When prompted then select only SSRS to install. There are notable differences in SSRS 2005 and SSRS 2008, most notably the requirement of IIS to be installed to support SSRS 2005. Also if you are installing this on a workstation that is running Vista there are some other obstacles that must be over come.
