I'm not sure why, but I kind of expected more from Microsoft Support. In this week's Database Daily there is a KB article on 3rd Party Product Support. The article basically says that Microsoft provides no certification of a 3rd party product on SQL Server.
The article makes sense and I wouldn't want to provide more support if it were my product, but I guess with all the certifications Microsoft does offer for hardware and software, I'd expect that there would be some products "certified" on SQL Server. But apparently not.
It's up the vendor to certify their product and if you have issues, MS support may ask you to reproduce the issue without the 3rd party product installed. That could be interesting, like if you had some issue with a product running against SQL Server and suspected it was SQL Server. PSS could ask you to uninstall the 3rd party product. Not a big deal on my desktop, but it could be a huge deal on a server application.
As expected, and what I would recommend anyway, is that any issues should go to the software vendor first anyway and only if they think it is a SQL Server problem should you call Microsoft. I have had to do this in the past and have two tech support people working on the phone together with me to solve an issue. Microsoft PSS did a great job being available and working with me, better than the other software vendor for sure.
It's still funny for me to actually see this article in print, however, and it makes me wonder how many calls they have been getting for 3rd party products with SQL Server 2005.

I feel that 'disappointing' is not descriptive enough a term. 'extremely late' does seem to fit better seeing as this type of announcement is a tad late by about 5 or so years ! Maybe this was the result f the lawyers who knows. But it does pose an interesting conundrum for us all ...
