CD/DVD burner problem

  • I'm asking folks here because I have searched online for a resolution, without success. I have a pc with two DVD-RW devices. I cannot burn CDs or DVDs on either unit. I CAN read CDs and DVDs on either drive. One drive is a sata device, and the second drive is an older pata device. You're probably wondering why I am using two -- I first tried using the sata device and I added the additional unit just to see if it would work. I've deleted the devices, and reinstalled the devices in device manager.

As I mentioned earlier, both units are recognized as DVD-RW according to the desktop icons, the device manager, and msinfo32 tool. I am using Windows 7 Enterprise with SP 1. The pc is a Dell Optiplex GX620.

I've tried simply copy/burning data, and I've also tried using Aimersoft DVD software. I've used Microsoftfixit DVD software and no problems were detected.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

  • Your DVD drive is writeable if the door on your dvd player/recorders has an RW on the door. If it isn't there then you probably have DVD player/CD burners.

  • Yes, both drives do have 'RW' etched on the face. Also the models are:

    Drive 1: NEC DVD-RW ND-3540A ATA device

    Drive 2: Optiarc DVD-RW AD-7260S ATA device

This has proven to be a mystery for me -- I haven't run into this before...

  • Which version of Windows are you running?

Did you check whether there is a newer version of BIOS for the machine?

  • Good point; i rechecked to be sure my info is correct:

    Windows 7 (x86) SP 1 build 7601

the bios version is A11. As far as I know, this is the latest available version for this hardware.

  • I will get back to you tomorrow morning -- it is time to do the Thanksgiving ritual.

  • Same here...Thanks for the help, and I hope you enjoy a great Thanksgiving!! 🙂
