Since you posted in a sql 2008 forum, what are the data types for the date? Are they datetime, date, datetime2, etc.
Also, is there a PK constraint or unique constraint...

I wonder if this should be construed as a bug? Extra stuff in a conversion to datetime throws an error. Seems it should be consistent.

I would think that for the evaluation of IS NULL, it would depend greatly on the distribution of data... if you have a million plus rows of data with 90%...
