    select isnumeric(right('camel 1', 1))

    select isnumeric(left(reverse('camel 1'), 1))...

    these seem to work fine...didn't test with variables though...

    I think you'll have to search the posts - this topic has been often discussed...I too use VSS and agree that it's hard to manage unless you're really really disciplined...

    does the description field always end in numbers ?

    is it always 1 and 2 or could they go up to any number ?

    Why are you trying to do this exactly...long story...legacy database..have to take rows from one table and update columns in another...will probably be back with some more stupid "how to"...

    hmm - so if it's 1 ID then min and max would both be the same right ?!

    maybe i don't need the Select @ID1 = -1, @ID2 = -1 defaults...
