32 bit Management Studio on your PC will connect just fine to 64 Bit SQL 2008. I am doing it here.

One way I could 'force' it to get these errors was to run a Integrity Check. We did everything you said and there was no smoking gun.

That is correct. It will request a restart if required. I always like to restart after applying any SP or Hotfixes to start fresh.
