2) use a variable in the select list

However, neither solution will correlate happily...

Use DBCC TRACESTATUS to check whether the trace flag has been applied correctly.

If not, something is wrong with your startup options.

Personally, I would go with mirroring and database snapshot, but I don't remember if the feature was there in 2005

The error is quite self explanatory: Failed to connect to server means it could't connect to the server.

Check if the server is running and spelled correctly in the serverlist file.
