I'm afraid it won't work in 2000.
You have very few options:
1) use a cursor to concatenate the rows
2) use a variable in the select list
However, neither solution will correlate happily...

Use DBCC TRACESTATUS to check whether the trace flag has been applied correctly.
If not, something is wrong with your startup options.

The remove node is referred to a single instance, so removing a node from an instance is not the same thing as evicting a node from the cluster.

Depends on what you want to achieve.
You can also partition with all partitions to the same filegroup.
What are the reasons why you want to partition this table?
Archiving automation?
Performance?

The error is quite self explanatory: Failed to connect to server means it could't connect to the server.
Check if the server is running and spelled correctly in the serverlist file.
