I guess I'd want to know who they are competing with as well.
I can't tell if Microsoft is mostly trying to avoid customer defections, seriously compete for share or grow...

DBAs are somewhat reactionary in technology adaptation.
That being said, are there any market share reports on the adaptation you are talking about?

The genius of Microsoft is the unit sale. The cloud seems like more of service business.
It will be interesting how they will compete if it doesn't drive license sales.
