But Alwayson sit on WSFC (assume it is a 2 node WSFC) - surely WSFC would need a shared disk (voting/witness) for maintaining quorum ?

it's a good idea to script out your jobs and keep them with your source, although backups are still preferrable

have you tried a restore via TSQL?
Can you post any error messages you see in the restore dialog?

upgrade to 2016, you'll only have to re run an upgrade at some point to 2016 anyway

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server 2012 evaluation edition to SQL Server 2014 Evaluation edition.

logon as a windows admin and take ownership of the files. Once done, remove all ACLs and add back the sql server service account with full control

the default encryption in sql server 2016 is AES, I'm fairly certain that in 2014 it's RC4. The block length for AES is not listed as configurable for the create...
