are these backups taken natively or via Litespeed or SQLBackup or some other 3rd party app.
Native restore will not recognise 3rd party backup files and it sounds very much...

has to be restore mode which is with no recovery.

how were you setting up the log shipping session, were you trying to use standby mode?
To log ship between versions of sql you must leave the secondary database in...
