yes exactly, adding a file in an AlwaysOn group is the same as adding a file in a database mirroring session,...

That is correct, manual failover is the only possible selection when integrating an FCI as a replica.

forget the replication for now, you need to understand how alwayson availability groups work and what the pre reqs are for them

then an add file operation should not cause any issues

can you supply more detail on the environment configuration?

have you run a cluster validation, what does this show?

can you supply more info. have look at the cluster events and also the system event logs
