    If I understand data types correctly (that's a huge assumption) then it doesn't really matter what the length is set to, nvarchar(max) would be exactly the same size...

    A database snapshot is not a backup.

    The confusion probably arose because you can RESTORE to a snapshot.

    Or a mix-up with SAN snapshots

    Whether to use replication in development enviornment or not?

    Yes if it is self-contained. No if you are thinking of replicating from a production system.
