If you can't alter one of the columns, then you have to enforce it with a trigger.

Why not use an identity column?
You can always use something like this... but you must lock the table for inserts when you do this :
Select @MyNewID = ISNULL(MAX(IdCol), 0)...

It's happened before... it's most likely and unclosed <table> statement that is causing this... nothing to worry about

Sounds like you have a problem with IIS and not sql server itself (unless you are missing permission to do inserts/updates/delete from a remote server)... Just throwing ideas in there...

Sounds like a lot of work... it's not... it's just a bit different, the Developer's are going to pitch a real bitch at first, and it will save your database...
