It checks if the previous value is different than the currentvalue (that's the start of a new group).
Runningvalue keeps a count of # of impressions. So in your case...

The only possible suggestion I can provide is to either use left join or flush the isnull. But I'm also certain that this would change the results.

Keep in mind that NOT IN is not 100% equivalent to the other 2. In you have a null in the in list the results will be different.
