I can't test this fromhere but I think that temp table are ONLY listed in tempdb.

xp_fileexists will not be a set based solution... this could run 10 times slower than the xp_cmdshell version.

We have 2 straight holidays this time of the year (that happen to fall on friday this year). Then in 2 weeks we're off for a 2 weeks vacations...

If you have several items with the same id with different meaning, you don't have a table and therefore cannot be queried. Try to fix the data first then...
