Okay, mystery somewhat solved. I just don't remember setting my default to none.

But if I cancel my subscription to the topic then post again with the Immediate notification setting, I will not start getting notifications for this topic.

One more test.

I found an option when posting to a topic where you can set your Topic Subscription Notification Type. It can be none or Immediate and what ever you set...

I don't have time right now to look at this with a critical eye (I am at work), but from what you are describing, this almost sounds like something PowerShell...

You will need the latest full backup and t-log backups taken after it. You may be able to run a tail log backup to capture changes in the transaction...
