Try building a view over this table. In the select statement for the view, do this for the image field:

cast(image_field as nvarchar(max))

And then use the view as your data...

Part of your problem could be the two corelated queries in the select statement.

Also, fyi for others reading this, the values reported in sys.sysfiles are in 8K pages, so multiplying those values by 8 should match what you see in windows explorer.
