A couple thoughts I had on why things are done in certain ways. ...

2. Before you ask questions or criticize somebody on their choice...

Much simplier:

declare @ThisDate datetime;

set @ThisDate = getdate();

select

getdate() as CurrentDateTime,

dateadd(mm, datediff(mm, 0, @ThisDate) + 1, 0) as BeginningOfNextMonth, -- Beginning of next month

...

This may work, but it isn't tested. there may also be a better way to write it as well.

UPDATE dbo.Orders SET

Rate = p.Rate

FROM

...

And I have to agree with Jeff as well. Don't shrink the staging database, it just has to grow again.
