There should be no problem installing both versions side by side.
Find the .exe files for both versions of BIDS (either in the sql server folders or in the visual studio...

Check the settings for FailPackageOnFailure and FailParentOnFailure.
If you want to write to several destinations while one of them may be unavailable, I think you should give each flow it's own...

Are you using the SQLServer Destination? If yes, it could be a permission issue:
Try using the OLE DB Destination instead.
