It's possible it's just a typo in what you posted, but the first thing I noticed is that you don't have single-quotes around the cut-off date in the When clause....

I just did a pretty heavy-duty test of the YYYYMMDD method, and it seems to be plenty fast and was accurate for all dates I checked.

If I am not mistaken the SAVE POINTS still does not provide you with an option to nest. It allows you to rollback to a certain point but...

The first rule with xp_cmdshell is don't use it unless you absolutely have to.
The second rule is, if you think you have to use it, you're probably wrong.

Say, for example, you have a stored procedure that inserts some data into a table, then calls...
