It sounds to me like something got stuck when it failed the first time. Have you tried simply rebooting the computer you're developing on, to see if that cleans...

It's probably a question of rights. The login you're using for the link probably doesn't have access to the other tables.

You have to use "dynamic SQL" for that kind of thing.
Create the select as a string variable (varchar or nvarchar), and execute the string.
