I think for SQL 2000, I'd do it with a loop. This is pretty much what the ranking functions and Apply were added to SQL 2005 to solve.

Keep in mind that CDC locks down table definitions the same way replication does. This means you cannot alter or remove columns without turning off CDC in some cases....
