    Maybe we are closer than you, but you didn't define what you meant by "nearby". To me, nearby has a different definition....

    Yes, you can prevent locks in the UDFs by making sure all of your connections are set to Transaction Isolation Level Read Uncommitted.

    That will remove all of the select locks....

    Have you tried connecting Excel to SQL Server? I've done that, for pivot tables, et al, and it works beautifully.

    As for SSRS, Report Builder has wizards for building reports...

    Start with sp_trace_create. Check that on MSDN, and it'll refer you to sp_trace_setevent, fn_trace_getinfo, and all the rest.

    You'll end up with compile locks for a number of reasons. The most common is if you don't use two-part names for objects being accessed by the UDFs. ...
