It's just another OODBMS (object oriented database management system) from what I can tell.

I'm accustomed to SANs with multiple fiber channels, so can't speak to that aspect of it.
I've been using servers where both data and logs are on the SAN for years,...

Let me guess, the problem was the implicit conversions being short-circuited. That'll add so much to the cost that the optimizer was bypassing it. Right?

If the DBAs don't allow bulk insert or ad hoc queries, which is a common security measure, then SSIS is your best bet.
