    Upgrade the 2005 instance to 2008 R2, move the databases over from the named instance, uninstall the named instance.

    My comment was that the yield from the FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY and HAVING clauses is not altered based on which index the engine picks.

    What do you mean by 'retention period'? SQL Server has no automatic purging or data retention features (except around job history and the like)

    Actually, the change of an index CAN very much change the result especially where UPDATEs are concerned.
