    I did.

    I started two traces yesterday.

    But apparently one of them caused disk space issues on C: drive on production server. (Oops!)

    Don't use the profiler GUI, use a server-side trace....

    how does SQL 2005/2008 know if there has never been a backup? if it's the MSDB backup history tables then SQL server agent may be purging these in...

    The error is saying that the log has been truncated sometime since the last full or diff backup. Look for jobs that run BACKUP LOG ... WITH TRUNCATE ONLY or...

    Now the problem is to figure out what SQL causes these timeouts.

    Set options and users, yes, different plans, however not reusable without exactly the same userID and/or set options.

    Interesting approach - we use Convert, relying on the fact that DateTime values are internally stored as floating-point values, with every whole number representing a day:
