Full backups do not truncate the transaction log. Only log backups do that. The only things that break a log chain are backup ... with truncate only and a switch...

You can also use the OBJECTPROPERTY function to see if a table has an identity. Check OBJECTPROPERTY in Books Online

It just means that the query that the client app submitted did not complete in the allowed time (default 30 sec). It may be that the query needs optimising or...

I don't know if you can buy SQL 2000 any longer. It's been out of support for about a year now. Is upgrading to SQL 2008 an option?
