Since you're on SQL 2005, use sys.indexes rather than the old sysindexes. sys.indexes contains only indexes, sysindexes can contain the column statistics as well.

I can't see any reason why that would be deadlocking then. Can you post the exec plan of one of those inserts? (saved as a .sqlplan file, zipped and attached)

Triggers fire when some data in the table is changed. If you need something that runs at a certain time of the day, you need a SQL Agent job.
