PAE and 3GB are totally and completely unnecessary with a 64-bit OS.
p.s. On a 32-bit server you wouldn't use 3GB if you had over 4GB of memory. You'd use PAE...

Careful, CROSS APPLY === INNER, if you want the equivalent of an outer join, you need OUTER APPLY.

Excellent as that book it, it assumes some knowledge.
For basic T-SQL, try Itzik Ben-Gan's T-SQL Fundamentals. Not sure about a beginner's guide to SQL Server though
