May I suggest an output parameter instead? The return code is supposed to be an indication of success or failure, not a data value.

Query the default trace and apply your own filters. Do note that the default trace is not a change log for all time, it keeps 5 files of 20MB each...

Need to spread over multiple files possibly filegroups if supported (one per CPU equal size?)
The 1 per CPU, equal size is an old and outdated recommendation for TempDB only....

Err, not exactly. Data modifications put the older versions into TempDB so that selects can read them if necessary.

Assuming you have severe blocking (and not just slow queries), have you considered snapshot or read committed snapshot isolation levels?
