IN is not an expensive operation. For matching rows, it's cheaper than join.
Moving a filter from a join to the where when you have an outer join changes the logic...

As Gail suggests, it's pointless using these query hints unless you can anticipate that they may work.
And adding hints to a query when you don't know what they do...

No, neither shrinking the log nor explicitly truncating it will reduce database backup size. The portion of the log included in a full backup is usually just from the start...
