    Reinforcing what Perry said, I recently deployed a new SQL Server on Windows 2012 and found the failover clustering to be much better than it was on Windows 2008.

    Another point to consider is that scalar functions have to run once for each row. If you have two functions, each one has to run once for each row.

    A SELECT TOP 1...ORDER BY would also do the trick.

    Not necessarily. RowNumber can do grouping, and so return one row per partition. Top 1 is just top...
