Use a trace with the 'stored procedure statement starting' event filter turned on against your specific SPID.
You should be able the exact SQL statement causing it.

1. The problem with this is that sqlServer will scan every row testing the logic, it wont shortcuit.
2. This should replace your cursor, though i cant test it...
