this may be to primitive but you could just use a try catch block to try get-cluster or get-clusternode and have the catch block handle stand-alone servers.

euhm did you know the SQLEngine now performs checkpointing by database ? ( apparently ever since SQL2005 )
Which db would you need to checkpoint (flush) for the sqlserver errorlog...
