Yes, sql 2005 standard. The max memory for sql is set to be 14.5GB.
Might want to consider lowering that a bit ... If you're running other apps...

You can run 2000, 2005 and 2008 all together if you'd like.

Putting maintenance plans aside, are you able to successfully back up the db and/or tran log manually? Are the failures at specific times? There could be one of many reasons...

Well, you could always test ... but AFAIK, you can not do this as SQL can not access disk that is not part of it's resource group and each instance...

If this is production, I'd always recommend running SSIS from another utility/app server, but regardless, you should set your max server memory settings appropriately to allow memory for the O/S...
