Does it happen constantly or sporadically?
If constantly, check your hardware.
If sporadically, check locks, scripts, stored procedures, ... all of software.

In the first run, an estimated execution plan is saved in the cache of your machine. When you have a second run, it will be faster.

If you did not audit, I do not think you can.
You can set the database options to AUTOCLOSE. Then you will know when a database is connected from SQL logs....
