Well, I've never seen it for OPENROWSET, but it sounds like you are being bitten by the "Two-Hop Rule". This thread has a good explanation of it for Linked...

Gmail handles these really nicely for me.

You certainly do not need a cursor for this. The same technique that I used above will work here also.
