Pick up Itzik Ben Gan's book on TSQL Fundamentals, if you can.

It will go a long way towards plugging a few gaps in your knowledge.

You can also take a look at using OUTPUT.

I would also add that if you have just taken over your environment then you will probably need to be as interested in your ability to restore your current backups...

I would be cautious not to delete any existing backup files until I have a new verified/restorable backup although that may well go without saying.
