Look up the Max() and Sum() aggregate functions. You could use those in sub-queries (or CTEs - those are my preference) and then join to the sub-query/CTE.

This can be done with a cursor, but I would recommend NOT doing it unless you absolutely have to. Most of the time, shrinking databases is a bad idea.

My first thought was that an ID column would mess that up, since it gets ignored by an implicit insert statement, but included in "select *", but I tested it...

That's probably a permissions issue. Make sure the job is running under an account that has the necessary rights. Often, you have to set up a proxy account...
