Windows Authentication using SSMS

  • Is there a way to change the windows login account from the Windows logged in user to a different account. I am looking to be able to change the account because the logged in user does not have local admin rights to the server but has Remote Desktop access.

    Thanks

  • I do not think it is possible. But I am not sure why you need to be a local admin to connect to the DB using SSMS?

  • If you wanted to restart the agent service you need to be a local admin or use the service account as the login to ssms.

  • You can start SSMS with the runas option and then use another windows login.

Good one Markus. I never thought about that. But does the user have to be a local admin to restart the SQL Server Agent? I am not sure about that. The user that logs on to SSMS should have sufficient rights. As per BOL

"Click SQL Server Agent in Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio to administer jobs, operators, alerts, and the SQL Server Agent service. However, Object Explorer only displays the SQL Server Agent node if you have permission to use it."
