Window Server 2008 R2 SP1 accidently shutdown with no explainations.

  • I have a production SQL Server 2008 that run on Window Server 2008 R2 SP1.

The Window server 2008 R2 SP1 and SQL Server 2008 has been running for 2 years with no issues.

Recently, the IT Team informed me that the server shutdown itself.

I asked them why and they did not provide any explanations.

Then, I looked Window Server's Even Viewwer logs and I did not find any errors that showed the server crash.

I suspected something else that caused the server shutdown instead of crashed.

    QUESTIONS:

    • How to check the Window Server was manually shutdown or crash?

•Can I trace down when the server was manual shutdown?

    Thanks in advance.

  • tracking the server going down look for event id 6006, event log service stopping. This is one of the last services to go down.

tracking the server coming up look for event id 6005, event log starting. This is one of the first services to start.

if the shutdown was unexpected look for event id 6008 followed by 6005
