Virtual Machine Software Choice - the Consultant's and Presenter's choice

  • I'm under the impression that many of those who operate as consultants, or as presentation presenters, and generally, those who are experimenting with multiple versions of operating systems and SQL Server are using virtual machines as a way to keep everything on a single hardware system and yet discrete and separate.

My question is whether there is a general preference as to using the opensource VirtualBox, or paying for one of the VMWare productions (VMWare Workstation, or VMWare Workstating Player), or using an another application for maintaining virtual systems.

    Thanks

  • there are a few options - https://www.techradar.com/news/best-virtual-machine-software - some of these would be mainly for presenters out of premises as it allows all in a single computer.

Not mentioned on this list is vmware Vsphere Hypervisor - also free https://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere-hypervisor.html - requires a dedicated host so not always feasible to take on the road but depending on what is required as demo it is still doable.
This is what I use at home (and work also but enterprise version there for all extra goodies)

  • Thank you for the link. Since I am looking for a solution to install multiple systems on a laptop, the Hypervisor sounds like way too much for my "simple" needs.

    thanks again.
