I have a bucketload of sql 6.5 databases. If I install sql 2k on the same box can I upgrade them in place or do I need install sql 7 to perform the upgrade? (Then upgrade from sql 7 - sql 2k)?

you can use DTS to move your database directly from 6.5 to 2k.

You can upgrade directly. There is little difference between 7 & 2000 and the upgrade is painless, you'll just save time going to 2000 directly.

I'm in a situation where I have a load of SQL 6.5 / NT4 servers, none of which is particularly new. The plan we'll be following shortly is to get a new SQL Server box (for SQL2k, Win2k) and migrate across servers, and then use the server freed up to migrate the next server, and so on down the line. It'll take a bit of time, but it should (in theory) provide a more stable upgrade path. I hope.
Now I just have to persuade the boss to part with the money...

We had enough space to do the in place upgrade. Once it was done, we moved the data off, formatted and reinstalled clean. Nothing like a fresh install!

Tend to agree about format and fresh install. Too many things to break in an upgrade in place.

We have nowhere near enough space to do that, particularly as SQL2k claims to need 50% more space for a database than SQL6.5.
