SQLServerAgent cannot start

  • I have a LAB Server that suddenly will not allow the SQLAgent to start.

I've checked everything I can think of and am getting the following in the agent error log. Everything was fine until late yesterday, it is a lab server, but I don't know of any changes except adding additional PULL subscriptions to it.

Nothing of any value in the event logs except agent won't start.

The agent is setup to use the same domain level account as SQL Server itself.

    NT4 / SP6a

    SQL7 sp4

    SQL2k SP2+

  • Did you reboot your server?

  • Well I solved it, although I would like to know the easy way to fix the problem.

Apparently one of the other techs is playing with DB2/UDB v8 and installed something that locked the ODBC registry key(s). I solved it by doing a registry rebuild.

Can anyone explain how to unlock registry keys, and maybe which keys would be involved for the ODBC. I'm not clear either as the id is Local Admin.

Note this is an educated guess as everything else I tried failed, reboots, stop start ....

So if someone has a better answer ??

  • I'm experienceing similar problems (i.e. Unable to connect to server '(local)'; SQLServerAgent cannot start)

How did you rebuild registry? Straight from OS install CD?

  • I used the Rebuild registry option.

If it is the same problem I had, you should be able to unlock the following registry keys "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ODBC\odbc.ini" and

    its subkeys.
