SQL 7 Maintenance Plans

  • Anyone have any bad experiences here? Have a client with SQL 7, worried about issues with the servers.

  • Now Steve, what's the deal here. I know I have seen you in dozens of these conversations and quite honestly, I script my maintainence myself. However, bad experiences were had in early release and Service Pack where the dog gone thing would just quit and consistently failed. This is why I switched to scripting, that and something I was wanting to that it didn't offer. I can't remember when exactly the issues were fixed but in they apparently do work now properly on a patched server.

  • We used maintenance plans on servers that used SQL Server 7.0 with SP 1 and later with SP 2 before upgrading to SQL Server 2000.

The only problem I remember having is that when you told it to automatically fix minor problems it once left a database in single user mode, so as long as you don't tell it to do that I think you will be fine.

  • I use SQL 7 Maintenance plans all over the place - the only issues i have has been incorrec configuration.

For example including "attempt to repair minor problems" in the Database integrity Check for plans that include system databases, or including the Master database in a plan that does transaction log backups.

  • That is what I thought. I was reviewing a setup for a client on SQL 7 and wanted to be sure.

My recomendation is to use scripts I've developed, but I wanted to let them know the pros and cons of maint plans. They don't have a DBA, barely network guys, IMHO.

    Thanks.
