Sharepoint Backup of Admin Databases

  • I'm about to take DBA administration for an existing SharePoint backend database server. It's MOSS 2007. The SQL Server is SQL Server 2005. I'm sorting through the databases to make sure there are full backups and log dumps, as appropriate.

Any idea why the "AdminContent" and "Config" databases are created with a default recovery mode as "full", but restoring of these databases is not supporting. Am I missing something here or what's the point of the "full" recovery mode? I'm considering changing them to simple, but don't know jack-squat about SharePoint. I will still back them up even if restoring them is unsupported.

This link says not to recover them: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc287880(office.12).aspx

This links says the default recovery mode is full: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jjameson/archive/2008/01/18/default-recovery-models-for-sharepoint-databases.aspx

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks,

    Cindy

  • Yeah, one of the million odd things about sharepoint.

I don't bother backing up the Admin or Search databases, since they're not usable and can easily be recreated from the app anyway.

The only time you ever need to set a database to full is for log shipping, or if you need point in time recovery. Since you're doing neither, set it to simple and then you can ditch all your backup jobs for it.

  • Thanks. No doubt I'll discover those other million things one at time.

  • To take Sharepoint backup you need to accomplish the tasks of content management, research and sharing of information, it uses a wide range of applications. The most common method for the Safeguarding of SharePoint is to backup SQL Server database where the data resides.
