Sharepoint 2013 and SSRS 2012 licensing, once and for all

  • Lets say I have a Sharepoint 2013 farm with two servers, S1 and S2.

S1 is a Sharepoint Web Front End and S2 is SQL Server 2012 SP1 std edition.

Now I decide to install the shared feature "Reporting Services - SharePoint" to S1 (see attached image).

Do I need a SQL Server license for S1?

I've been searching for the answer a few hours today, but can't find a really good answer...

And yes, maybe I should call/email Microsoft...

  • We just went through the true up process with SQL and Sharepoint and the answer is YES. You must license S1 seperately if it has reporting services for Sharepoint installed. The other option is to install it on the S2 SQL server and you won't have to pay. My experience was with Enterprise level core based licensing.

  • Hmm, I was just going to answer my own question, and I would say:

No, I don't need another SQL server license!
