    Well said!  I find in interesting how almost every DBA story begins with a baptism through fire.

    1.  "There's something wrong with the database...quick point a finger at some IT guy!"
    2.  The Accidental DBA
    3. "This stuff is cool!  I need to learn more about this."
    4.  DBA
    5. "Hmmm...I don't know as much as I thought I did"
    6.  Learn more stuff
    7. Go to Step 5

    Once the system is in production, it becomes very hard to change anything, from security to code, without lots of testing and approvals. I find that often trying to work within constraints drives a lot of learning, though not often deep or varied enough to investigate all the options.

    I cannot agree more. I've learnt so much from badly coded systems than I have from well coded ones.
