Newbie hopelessly lost

  • i installed SQLServer2000 recently but cannot connect.

i'm so lost that i don't really even know what info to offer you.

    i used Windows logon mode.

    If i go to

    Computer Management

    Services and Applications

    Microsoft SQL Servers

    (local)(Windows NT)

it says "Connection failed. Check server registration properties."

    Properties are set as follows:

    Connection: Use Windows authentication

    Server group: Microsoft SQL Servers

    All checkboxes are checked

When trying to open the NorthwindCS sample, it says (disconnected).

If i go to File/Connection, no server name is listed.

If i try to select the database on the server, i get

    "server does not exist."

    What am i doing wrong?

    Thanks, e

  • ok, load up enterprise manager.

it looks like we need to re-register the server on your tools

did you set an sa password at install time?

if so right click on your server in enterprise manager and cick edit server registration (or,delete the existing one and make a new one)

now choose your server from thi list and choose SQL authentication - no use the sa username and password (if you didn't set one - tut tut, use the blank password)

your server should eb registered and you can have a look at the security options.

add your username into the server and grant yourself System administration role. (assuming you aren't in the local admin group)

if you re-register your server now, you will be able to use windows authentication without problems
