  • What have you done to debug it? Have you determined which call to the stored procedure is breaking? (i.e., what parameters?). You may have to use extended events or a trace to do so.

    Have you determined specifically which statement is breaking? Have you determined which column/variable/expression is resulting in an invalid evaluation? It will be one where the value of length exceeds the length of the string being evaluated, or resolves to less than zero.

    With a complicated problem, break it down. Turn the procedure into a script by commenting out or excluding the procedure definition statements -- i.e., replace

    When you run the script, SSMS (assuming you're using that tool) may take you to the statement that failed.

    If not, you may have to comment out subsequent statements and progressively uncomment until you hit the problem. You may even have to comment out individual lines of selects or where clauses containing LEFT() and SUBSTRING() to home in on the problem.
