I had a situation I haven't seen before where MSDTC was running on a clustered server - that is, it was showing as running in cluster administrator, but in SSMS it was showing as not running. I tried restarting SQL on the same node to no avail. Only when I failed over was I able to get it to show up green. So what I would like to know - is there a way to monitor this? I can't monitor the service itself because it is turned on, according to windows. It's just SQL that doesn't show that it's on.

shows on my SSMS - sql 2008 running on w2012 cluster. I actually use SQL Diagnostic Manager for monitoring so this will alert me if the service is offline.
